The Online Identity
Commissioned by KONG | Ministry of Justice
Shady dealings. Making the public aware of online identity theft, a campaign commissioned by KONG and produced for the Ministry of Justice, with the main attraction being a viral video. Undercover journalist John Hillerman buys online identities from a ‘hackers hub’ in Central Europe. The identity he buys is - yours! Refunk skilfully integrated personal information and photos from internet-sources, highlighting the fact private details are up for grabs. Chilling material, especially since the phone conversations (dynamically generated from internet sources) are clearly about you too.
The campaign was preceded with an ambush on the Dutch eBay, Marktplaats.nl. After users close a deal, a webcam image pops up, showing two shady creatures in apparent panic – their webcam sprung to service without their consent. They close it quickly, leaving the buyer in a worried limbo about what he just witnessed. The solution follows quickly: a popup with a government logo warns against internet-frauds.
