Carte Noire site wins Golden Award of Montreux!

It's award time again! This time our "Une Déclaration Nommée Désir" website for Carte Noire was the lucky winner of a Golden Award at the 2008 Montreux Festival in the catagory "Multimedia/web/CD-rom".

Commissioned by Euro RSCG 4D Amsterdam, Refunk produced the Valentine's Day website where visitors can compose a personalized love serenade to try to seduce the one they desire.

The receivers of this 'Déclaration Nommée Désire' can choose to guess the identity of their secret admirer in a hint-based quiz, and if successful participate in a competition with a chance to win a magical trip for two.

The site is in French and can still be seen here: Une Déclaration Nommée Désir.

The winners of the Gold Medal de Montreux can be found here: goldenawardmontreux.com.

Rabobank's mobile spring offer

Commissioned by EuroRSCG4D Amsterdam, Refunk produced the 'RaboMobiel 5 keer voordeel' campaign microsite. Promoting their new spring offer we produced a narrative video website where a sales person tells you all about the products of your choosing. This sales person is fully integrated in 'his' site and handles parts of the site as if they were physical objects.

RaboMobiel is a novel product that aims to integrate banking into the vast array of possibilities of today's mobile phone technology. It offers a secure way of handling all the features found in Internet banking with the added advantage of being able to access them at any time.

Flash binnen het Gilde van Front-Enders

Yesterday more than a hundred front-end web developers gathered in Amsterdam to found an association that aims to further professionalize the front-end programming discipline within the Netherlands and is temporarily named the Gilde van Front-Enders. The last presentation of the day's congres was presented by our own Bobby van der Sluis, and was titled "Flash binnen het Gilde van Front-Enders".

In his presentation Bobby explained why Flash should be a discipline within the brand new association and how this can be fulfilled properly in an initiative that was originally founded by people from the web standards community, however has the ambition to represent the front-end discipline as a whole. Bobby also analyzes the nature of the front-end discipline and discusses a few common misconceptions about front-end technologies.

The original presentation is posted here (in Dutch).
The translated version can be found here (in English).

Aurea by Philips

Commissioned by Tribal DDB Amsterdam, Refunk produced the Philips Aurea teaser campaign website. The latest and ultimate manifestation of Philips' innovative Ambilight technology, Aurea brings light and color to life in an unparalleled, highly visual and immersive fashion, drawing the audience into the full emotional experience Ambilight offers. The Aurea marks a departure from the world of television as we know it today.

Tied within the concept of seduction by light the website lets visitors play with sounds and lights and explore an interactive and atmospheric environment dominated by lights, color and seduction. The website includes original photo material of fashion photographer Vincent Peters and video material of film director Wong Kar Wai.

In this non-traditional seductive campaign the website slowly counts down to product launch and step-by-step increases the tension by slowly unveiling the story behind Aurea and showing more detailed visuals the closer it gets to launch day.

NMBS Go Pass

Commissioned by Euro RSCG 4D Amsterdam and EURO RSCG Brussel, Refunk produced the NMBS Go Pass website. With the Go Pass the Belgium Railways offers young Belgium adults ten single 2nd class trips between two Belgian stations of their choice for a fixed low fare.

Visitors are invited into an online travel agency, where they can interact with two elderly and somewhat crazy travel agents, named Yvonne and Maurice, in a narrative video interface. They can also enter a start and an end station, which triggers the retrieval of a valid route from the NMBS route engine and generates a custom trip video.

Flash Embedding Cage Match

In my latest article on A List Apart I discuss what makes a great Flash embedding method and examine the most popular Flash embedding methods to see how good they really are.

To support the article, I have created a Flash embed test suite to assess browser support for various markup-based embedding methods. The test suite includes information on parameters including support for different Flash publish settings, streaming, and scriptability.

Flash Embedding Cage Match introduces SWFFix, which is a project by Geoff Stearns and myself with the goal to create one new and improved Flash embed JavaScript library that over time will phase out our existing UFO and SWFObject libraries.

Rabobank Mobile Banking

Commissioned by Euro RSCG 4D Amsterdam, Refunk produced the Rabobank mobile banking campaign website. A novel product aimed at integrating banking into the vast array of possibilities of today's mobile phone technology, Rabo Mobiel offers a secure way of handling all the features and possibilities found in internet banking with the added advantage of being able to access them at any time.

Tied in with the product presentation concept of the tv-commercial, by integrating audio, video and natural language processing, the website offers the possibility of engaging in some Q&A with Jochem de Bruin concerning the product in a dynamic environment.

A question on the workings of Rabo Mobiel, for instance: “How does mobile banking work?”

Will yield an answer that will match the query as closely as possible.

You can check the Rabo Mobiel demo here.

Developing Flash websites using progressive enhancement

Refunk offers her clients original and effective concepts, eye candy visuals and integrated audio-visual designs based on a smart information architecture and sound technology. We are specialized in Adobe Flash and one of the challenges of almost any new project is to explain how we can make responsible Flash websites, which includes plug-in detection, browser integration, but also visibility for search engines and alternative content for visitors who don't have the required plug-in support.

Refunk's standard offering includes a development philosophy called progressive enhancement, which we have applied to several projects in the past year with great results, especially in the area of search engine optimization where Flash sites traditionally are not visible to search engines and rate badly. In our latest article on Adobe Devnet we explain in details what progressive enhancement is all about and what our vision is on how Flash websites can best be created technically.

Our renewed blog is a good example of applying this principle. If you switch off the support for JavaScript or plug-ins in your browser, you will find the same blog in HTML. Please note that we have created one website only and that we use a regular publishing system to write once and publish for multiple views of our content: Flash, HTML, RSS and Atom. If you are interested to hear more about this, please contact us at info[at]refunk[dot]com.

Commissioned by Ogilvy Amsterdam, Refunk created the Dove Hello Sunshine campaign website. Aimed at a younger women demographic this messageboard was created to start a send-to-a-friend-to-a-friend chain, while politely collecting contact data (with opt-in) while offering a discount after posting 3 messages.

After receiving a message from a (girl)friend, you can send your own message via the rays of the sun.
